The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center
is an amazing performing arts complex at the University of Maryland in College Park. Curator Paul Brohan and director Susie Farr decided to celebrate the Center's 10th anniversary by inviting both Eiko & Koma and Kronos Quartet for multiple engagements throughout the 2011-2012 season. The Center is proud of its rich history with both Kronos Quartet and Eiko & Koma, and has commissioned a collaboration between these artists to premiere in February 2012.
The year of activities kicked off with Eiko & Koma's performances of Regeneration on September 14-15. The concerts were sold out with UMD's students sitting on the front row.
Sarah Halzack writes in the Washington Post:
Through dances that are unapologetically slow-paced and dreamlike in mood and setting, the pair can make the brains of even the most overstimulated multi-taskers grind to a halt, bringing the beauty and importance of the simplest movements and the most instinctive emotions into sharp focus.
On the following night, Kronos Quartet performed with another Eiko & Koma collaborator, David Krakauer. During this time together in Maryland, the artists had the opportunity to attend each other's concerts, and to converse both privately and publicly about their new collaboration.
